New Poll

Because we’re still trying to tweak our system, and we value your input, please feel free to participate in the poll below:

1,000 Page Views!

Very early this morning we received our thousandth page view, hurrah! Of course, this doesn’t correspond to a thousand unique persons, but we will take our victories where we can. So far we’ve had an overwhelming response to Two-Bit Magazine, almost exclusively positive, with good feedback and a number of questions that have helped us refine our mission and guidelines.

Earlier this month, we posted the front cover of the first issue of Two-Bit Magazine. We mentioned that we would post more info and examples on the upcoming issue, and in accordance with that, here is the mock-up of our mast, featuring the heading font and general font for the issue; keep in mind that this is a dummy, and will be subject to change (you will notice some minor formatting issues).

Also, we encourage you to take a look at the latest episode of public radio show Studio 360, featuring an entertaining and fascinating interview with writer James Ellroy – his novels include L.A. Confidential and The Black Dahlia. He edited Best American Mystery Stories 2002. Check out the interview here.

The Atlantic: “Telling Tails” by Tim O’Brien

As with our links, trying to direct writers, new and old, to resources that may be useful, we will occasionally post links to content in other magazines that we deem important, interesting or useful for all writers. With that in mind, we direct you to an essay by Tim O’Brien that appeared in the 2009 fiction edition of The Atlantic. The essay deals with the nature of writing and imagination, and loosely touches on the concepts of magical realism. It’s a must-read for any young writer.

Downtime Explanation

We here at Two-Bit Magazine just wanted to apologize for anyone who experienced some downtime earlier this evening. The reason is, well, maybe you’ve noticed if you’ve looked at your URL bar, but Two-Bit Magazine now has its own domain, http://www.twobitmagazine.com. Don’t worry if you’re still using the old address, it will redirect you to our new page.

We are also changing over to our new email system – submissions should now be directed to editor@twobitmagazine.com. Again, don’t worry if you still email the old address, emails will be redirected to the new account. Our submission guidelines will be updated to reflect these changes.

Thanks very much for your patience as we continue to develop,

Teaser: Issue #1 Cover

In our “About Two-Bit” section, we mention that each PDF/publication will be unique. What this means is that each issue will feature an original design style. For our first issue, we’ve selected a chalk-and-cardboard motif. Actual layout within the issue will be done with Adobe InDesign CS4, and feature a standard design font, but page panels and front/back covers will be handmade and scanned, to be reproduced digitally. Featured below is our cover for Issue #1. Page layout teasers will be forthcoming.
